DRS Technologies awarded contracts for high-speed airborne digital imaging systems\r\n
\r\nNOVEMBER 12–DRS Technologies Inc. (Parsippany, NJ; www.drs.com) has been awarded two new contracts to produce high-speed digital imaging systems for installation on US and Canadian combat aircraft. The company’s Airborne Separation Video System (ASVS) is a high-speed digital imaging system specifically designed and qualified to replace film cameras to capture airborne weapons-separation events. The awards have a combined value of approximately $2.5 million, including contract options. Work for both contracts will be performed at the company’s operation in Oakland, NJ.“;“The first contract, valued at approximately $1.2 million with $1.1 initially funded, was awarded to DRS by the Naval Air Warfare Center’s Aircraft Division, Patuxent River, MD. For this award, the company will produce the ASVS, consisting of long-term test capability (LTTC) cameras, multicamera system controllers (MSC), and spares for US Navy F/A-18 Hornet and US Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon and F-15 Eagle combat aircraft. Product deliveries are expected to commence in May 2003 and continue through September 2004.\r\n

\r\nThe second contract is valued at approximately $1.3 million, including options, with $0.7 million currently funded. It was awarded to DRS by Public Works and Government Services Canada, on behalf of Canada’s Department of National Defence. For this order, the company will provide LTTC cameras, MSC hard drives, a cockpit control unit (CCU), and training. These LTTCs will fly on Canada’s CF-18 Hornet aircraft and will be utilized on the CT-133 Silver Star ejection seat test bed. Completion of product deliveries is expected in March 2003. \r\n
\r\n \r\n
\r\nThe LTTC camera is the latest variant in the ASVS product line. The unique design of the MSC allows it to simultaneously control up to 32 cameras. Its internal storage and download capacity allows it to capture multiple weapon-separation events during a single test flight. The CCU allows flight crew to monitor the ASVS and modify mission parameters in flight, significantly reducing costly re-testing on additional flights.\r\n
\r\n\r\n
\r\nThe ASVS program is the result of the US government’s commitment to implement a transition from the use of wet film cameras to high-speed digital imaging systems. The versatility of the ASVS systems has increased their application for a number of customer uses. ASVS systems can be used by tri-service defense communities and provide significant cost savings to the government. The ASVS product line also is deployed on other international aircraft during test flights.\r\n
\r\n\r\n
\r\nThe ASVS is comprised of electronically shuttered, high-speed, high-resolution digital imaging cameras, a high-density digital data storage device, and associated electronics that meet the requirements of the Office of the Secretary of Defense-sponsored, tri-service Central Test and Evaluation Investment Program. The system’s application to various tri-service Test and Evaluation Range Operations is contributing to a reduction in hazardous chemical waste, associated with traditional film-development methods, and a reduction in costs associated with film processing and subsequent digitization. Captured images can be immediately downloaded, analyzed, and archived. For certain applications, DRS has incorporated a color capability for the system and miniaturized the high-speed camera to assure compatibility with most air platforms, making it the ideal choice for various fixed- and rotary-wing military aircraft, as well as ground-based launch systems.\r\n
